Abstract As a softer and politer way of saying, euphemism replaces offensive language and has become more and more common in our daily life. However, among various euphemisms, diplomatic euphemism plays the most significant role in foreign affairs. These attendees of foreign affairs used diplomatic euphemism to avoid conflict or embarrassment for national interests. Based on the cooperative principle and conversational implicature theory by Grice, this paper was aimed at researching the relations, similarities and differences between conversational implicature and diplomatic euphemism. Taking the background of trade dispute between China and America in 2018, the author chose several representative remarks of American president Trump as cases to study, focusing on analyzing the characteristics and contexts of diplomatic euphemism and conversational implicature. Finally, the differences between diplomatic euphemism and conversational implicature were carried out, which would help diplomats to advance diplomatic process.
