It has been widely approved by acupuncture and moxibustion researchers at home and abroad. The basis of the acupuncture effects is possibly related with the brain and the relative central nerve system networks. Up to now, most of the acupuncture-related fMRI studies adopt classical block design model, i.e., the task stimulation alternates with the resting state, so, the final task effect is the difference between the task response and the resting state response. For example, the studies about the acupoint specificity mainly compare acupuncture effects between real points and sham points, true needling and sham needling at acupoints, different acupoints on a same meridian, etc., investigating the directional activation of acupoint specificity in different brain regions. Xiao, et alobserved the characteristics of functional imaging of intracerebral effects of acupuncture at Zúsānlǐ (足三里ST 36) with reinforcing manipulation and found that the temporal lobe activating area in the acupoint group had specificity as compared with the non-acupoint group, and there was a statistically significant difference in difference of activating reaction rates between the right and left hemispheres of the temporal lobe, so it is inferred that acupoints treat organ diseases and modulate organ dysfunctions possibly through the brain as a mediator. When acupuncture was given at Tàichōng (太冲LR 3) , Xíngjiān (行间LR 2) , Nèitíng (内庭ST 44) and non-acupoints, for the brain region ranges and intensity activated, the range activated by non-acupoints was the smallest and
