AIDS Have you ever seen this design?This is the Red Ribbon. It is an international symbol of AIDS awareness. People wear the ribbon, especially around World AIDS Day, to show care and concern about HIV and AIDS. Current Situation of AIDSAccording to UNAIDS 2009 report: some 60 million people have been infected with HIV / AIDS worldwide; some 25 million people have died of HIV-related causes; some 14 million children have been orphaned by the epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. Current Situation of AIDSAlthough treatments for AIDS and HIV can slow the course of the disease, there is no known cure or vaccine. At Present, the prevention of infection is a key aim to control the AIDS epidemic. What Is AIDS? AIDS is a very serious disease caused by the HIV virus, which brings severe damage to the body immune system and destroy the body’s natural ability to fight infection.AIDS = Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (获得性免疫缺损综合症) What Is HIV? HIV is a virus which causes AIDS and attacks the immune system and leaves the body vulnerable to a variety of life-threatening infections and cancers.HIV = Human Immunodeficiency Virus (人类免疫缺陷病毒) AIDS HIV AIDS is different from HIV : AIDS usually causes death, but HIV may lead to AIDS. Ways of HIV transmission The virus can be spread (transmitted) through: (1) all types of sexual contact; (2) contact with infected blood; (3) mother to child People at Highest Risk for HIV Infection(1) Injection drug users who share needles; (2) Infants born to mothers with HIV; (3) People engaging in unprotected sex with those who are HIV-positive, or have AIDS; (4) Sexual partners of those who participate in high-risk activities (such as injection drug use or anal sex). Symptoms of HIV InfectionInitial infection with HIV may produce no symptoms, but they can still transmit the infection to others during this symptom-free period.Common symptoms are: Chills(寒冷), Fevers, Sweats (particularly at night), Swollen lymph(淋巴) glands(腺), Weakness, Weight
