Unit 6 Growing Pains I. Unit Overview We all have experienced growing pains no matter whether we once noticed them or not. Both texts in this unit tell us something about growing pains. Deborah Tannen, the author of Text A, was born in 1945. She is a professor of linguistics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Educated at Harpur College, Wayne State University, and the University of California at Berkeley (where she earned an MA and Ph.D. in linguistics), Tannen has written best-selling books on gender issues and differences and also on how the language of everyday conversation affects relationships. Among her most popular books are You Just Don ’t Understand: Women and Men in Conversation (1990), The Argument Culture: Stopping America ’s War of Words (1999), and You ’re Wearing THAT?: Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation (2006). Richard Bach, the author of Text B, was born in 1936. He is an American writer. Bach has written numerous works of fiction, and also non-fiction flight-related titles.
