Unit 4 Go, Robots! I. Unit Overview Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. The term may also be applied to any machine that exhibits traits associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving. When most people hear the term artificial intelligence, the first thing they usually think of is robots. Each of these machines benefits humans in many industries, but at the same time it must weigh the consequences of any action they take, as each action will impact the end result. Since its beginning, artificial intelligence has come under concern from scientists and the public alike. One common theme is the idea that machines will become so highly developed that it may affect human employment and people would be pushed out of the workforce. To deal with this problem, Bill Gates suggests taxing the robots, which is, however, disagreed by the author of Text A. Another concern for AI is that machines can hack into people’s privacy and even be weaponized. Text B of this unit is a vivid description of the life experienced by a human wife who has a robot husband. This unit will give students a good opportunity to reflect on the effects that AI may have on humans. II.
