resourcesonehastoproduceoriginalideasthataregoodforsomething.

Unfortunately,schoolshavenottendedtopromotecreativity.Withstrongemphasisontestscoresandthedevelopmentofreading,writingandmathematicalskills,manyeducatorssacrificecreativityforcorrectanswers.Theresultisthatchildrencangivebackinformationbutcantrecognizewaystoapplyittonewsituations.Theymayknowtheirmultiplicationtables,forexample,buttheyareunabletoapplythemtostoryproblems.

Insomeschools,however,educatorsarerecognizingtheproblemandaredevelopingnewapproachestoteachingwhichshouldencouragecreativityintheirstudents.Someteachersarecombiningthebasicswithactivitieswherethestudentsmustusetheirimagination.Forexample,insteadofsimplyaskingWHENColumbusdiscoveredtheNewWorld,teachersmightaskstudentstothinkaboutwhatwouldhavehappenedifhistriphadtakenhimtoNewYorkfirstinsteadoftotheCaribbeanarea.Withthatquestion,studentswouldhavetousewhattheyknowaboutColumbus,whattheyknowaboutNewYork,andwhattheyknowabouttheCaribbean.Teachersfeelthateveniftheanswersseemsilly,itsOK,thatsometimesbeingsillyisanessenti
