TheycarriedoutthefirsttwoexperimentsfromthesidewalknearBerkeley.Theynotedthat
driversofnewerandmoreexpensivecarsweremorelikelytocutoffothercarsandpedestrians
atcrosswalks.Nearly45percentofpeopledrivingexpensiveearsignoredapedestriancompared
withonly30percentofpeopledrivingmowmodestcars.
Inanotherexperiment,agroupofcollegestudentswasaskediftheywoulddoimmoralthings
invariouseverydaysituations.Examplesincludedtakingprinterpaperfromworkandnottellinga
salespersonwhenheorshegavebackmorechange.Studentsfromhigher—classfamilieswere
morelikelytoactdishonestly.
Accordingtothescientists,richpeopleoftenthinkmoneycangetthemoutoftrouble.This
makesthemlessafraidtotakerisks.Italsomeanstheycarelessaboutotherpeoplesfeelings.
Finally,itjustmakesthemgreedier.“Higherwealthstatusseemstomakeyouwantevenmore,
andthatincreasedwantleadsyoutobendtherulesorbreaktherulestoserveyourself-
interest,”saidPaulPiff,leadscientistofthestudy.
Piffpointedoutthatthefindingsdontmeanthatallrichpeopleareuntrustworthyorallpoor
peoplehonest.Hesaidtheexperimentsweretoshowhowpeoplelivingindifferentsocial
situationsexpresstheirinstincts(本能)andvaluesindifferentways.
