Thespatialextentofattentiontovisuallypresentedlettersandwordswasinves-

tigatedusingaprobetechnique.Theprimarytaskrequiredsubjectstocategorize

(a)five-letterwords,ortocategorizethemiddleletterof(b)five-letterwordsor

(c)five-letternonwords.Theprobetaskrequiredthesubjectstorespondwhen

thedigit7appearedinoneofthefiveletterpositions.Probetrialswereinserted

attheonsetofletterandwordprocessinginExperiment1and500msecafter

letterandwordprocessinginExperiment2.Inbothexperiments,probetrials

producedaV-shapedfunctionofreactiontimesacrossprobepositionsforthe

letter-categorizationtaskforwordandnonwordstimulusconditions.Incontrast,

arelativelyflatreactiontimefunctionwasfoundfortheword-categorization

tasks.Ananalysisofthedatabasedonaquantitativemodelofattentionalspotlight

distributionssuggeststhatthespotlightwidthinthelettertasksisoneletterspace,

andthespotlightwidthinthewordtaskistypicallyfivespaces.
