TheOperatingUnitsoftheDepartmentofCommerce(DOC)havemadeaheavyinvestmentinthedevelopmentofenterprise-wideEnterpriseArchitectures.WeneedtoensurethattheDepartmentcontinuestobuildonpreviouseffortsandfullyrealizethebenefitsofEnterpriseArchitecture.
Assessmentsofbusinessprocesseswithinanorganizationareneededtoevaluatewhereweareandwhereweshouldbeheaded,andwhatroleITshouldplayingettingthere.TheDepartmenthasdevelopedanEnterpriseArchitectureCapabilityMaturityModel(CMM)toaidinconductingsuchassessments.ThegoalistoenhancetheoveralloddsforsuccessoftheEnterpriseArchitecturebyidentifyingweakareasandprovidingadefinedpathtowardsimprovement.AsanArchitecturematures,itshouldincreasethebenefitsitofferstheorganization.
Overthepastfewyears,manydisciplineshavedevelopedcapabilitymaturitymodelsdesignedtosupportprocessimprovement.Theseincludetheareasofsoftwaredevelopment,systemsengineering,integratedproductandprocessdevelopment,andsecurity.TheprocessmaturitymodelmostITorganizationsuseorbasetheirmodelsonistheSoftwareEngineeringInstitute
