Introduction:
Polymerizationofcationicpolymersplaysacrucialroleinmanyindustriessuchaswatertreatment,papermaking,andcosmetics.Amongthem,quaternaryammonium-basedcationicpolymersarewidelyusedduetotheirexcellentwater-solubility,stableperformance,andbiodegradability.Poly(diallyldimethylammoniumchloride-co-acrylamide)(P(DAC-AM))isoneofthemostcommonlyusedquaternaryammonium-basedcationicpolymers.
Toimproveitsperformanceandexpanditsapplication,itisnecessarytostudythesynthesisprocessofP(DAC-AM)indepth.Inthisreport,weaimtoinvestigatethepolymerizationprocessofP(DAC-AM)with50%cationicdegreebytwodifferentinitiatingsystems.
Methodology:
1.Materials:diallyldimethylammoniumchloride(DAC),acrylamide(AM),ammoniumpersulfate(APS),potassiumpersulfate(KPS),N,N,N,N-tetramethylethylenediamine(TEMED),anddeionizedwater.
2.Polymerizationprocess:
a)InitiationwithAPS:AmixtureofDACandAMwithamolarratioof1:1wasdissolvedindeionizedwatertoforma50%cationicdegreesolution.Then,APSwasaddedtothesolutionasaradicalinitiator.Themixturewasstirredandheatedtoinitiatethepolymerizationprocess.
b)InitiationwithKPS/TEMED:AmixtureofDACandAMwithamolarratioof1:1wasdissolvedindeionizedwatertoforma50%cationicdegreesolution.AmixtureofKPSandTEMEDwasaddedtothesolutionasaredoxinitiator.Themixturewasstirredandheatedtoinitiatethepolymerizationprocess.
3.Characterization:TheobtainedpolymerwascharacterizedbyFouriertransforminfraredspectroscopy(FTIR),gelpermeationchromatography(GPC),andzetapotentialanalysis.
ExpectedResults:
ItisexpectedthatthepolymerizationprocessofP(DAC-AM)with50%cationicdegreewillbesuccessfullytriggeredb
