ObjectivesTellthedifferencebetweendifferentimagerepresentations.ComparedifferentWebgraphicfileformats.Masterthebasicimageprocessingskills.UseimagesonaWebpageappropriately.2

ImagerepresentationThereare2typesofimage:bitmappedandvector.Bitmapanimageisdividedintoamatrixofpixels.eachpixelisassignedabitpattern.torepresentablackandwhiteimage,1representswhitepixeland0representsblackone.torepresentacolorimage,apixelisdecomposedintothreecolors(RGB).3

ImagerepresentationForacolorimage,eachpixelhasthreebitpatterns:onetorepresenttheintensityoftheredcolor,onetorepresenttheintensityofthegreencolor,andonetorepresenttheintensityofthebluecolor.4

ImagerepresentationVectoranimageisdecomposedintoacombinationofcurvesandlines.eachcurveorlineisrepresentedbyamathematicalformula.Forexample,alinemaybedescribedbythecoordinatesofitsendpoints,andacirclemaybedescribedbythecoordinatesofitscenterandthelengthofitsradius.theyusemuchlessstoragespacethanbitmapimages,butdonotlookasrealisticasbitmapimages.5

WebgraphicimageformatAlthoughtherearedozensofgraphicfileformatsoutthereintheworld,onlythreearesupportedbywebbrowsersforuseonwebpages:GIF(pronounced“jiff”)JPEG(pronounced“jay-peg”)PNG(pronounced“ping”)6

GIFTheGIF(GraphicInterchangeFormat)isthefirstfileformattobesupportedbywebbrowsers.GIFsareindexedcolorfileswithamaximum8-bitpalettecapacity,whichmeansthataGIFcancontainamaximumof256pixelcolors.GIFfilesaremostappropriateforgraphicsthatcontainareasofflatcolor,suchaslogos,cartoon-likeillustrations,icons,andlineart.TransparentGIFscanbeused.AnimatedGIFscanbeused.7

JPEGJPEG(JointPhotographicExpertsGroup)filescontain24-bitcolorinformation.Youcancontroltheamountofcompressionwhenyousaveanimage
