LeiFengwasborninruralChinain1940andjoinedthePLAattheageof20.Throughouthistimeinthearmy,hewasknownforhistirelessdedicationtoservingothers,whetherthatmeanthelpinghisfellowsoldierswiththeirchoresorvolunteeringinthecommunity.LeiFengfamouslykeptadiary,inwhichherecordedhisdailyactsofkindnessandselflessness.

OneofthemostfamousstoriesaboutLeiFengisthetimehegavehislastpieceofbreadtoahungrychild,eventhoughhehadgonewithoutfoodhimselfforseveraldays.ThisactofgenerosityandcompassionhasbecomeasymbolofthespiritofLeiFeng,remindingpeoplethateveninthemostdifficultcircumstances,thereisalwaysawaytohelpthoseinneed.
