NormanBethunewasborninOntario,Canadain1890.HestudiedmedicineattheUniversityofTorontoandlatercompletedhistraininginsurgeryinLondonandMontreal.Bethunewasatalentedandskillfulsurgeon,buthewasalsoknownforhishumanitarianspiritandhiscommitmenttohelpingthoseinneed.

Inthe1930s,Bethunebecameinvolvedinpoliticalactivismandsocialjusticeissues.HewasastrongsupporteroftheSpanishRepublicduringtheSpanishCivilWarandworkedasasurgeonfortheInternationalBrigades.BethunesexperiencesinSpaindeepenedhiscommitmenttohumanitariancauses,andhebecameincreasinglyinterestedintheideaofprovidingmedicalcaretothosewhocouldnotaffordit.

In1938,BethunetraveledtoChinatohelptheChineseCommunistPartyintheirfightagainstJapaneseinvaders.Hesetupmobilemedicalunitstoprovidecaretosoldiersandciviliansinruralareas,oftenworkingindifficultanddangerousconditions.BethunestirelesseffortssavedcountlesslivesandearnedhimtheadmirationandrespectoftheChinesepeople.

Tragically,NormanBethunediedinChinain1939fromaninfectionhecontractedwhiletreatingwoundedsoldiers.TheChinesegovernmenthonoredhismemorywithastatefuneral,andBethunebecameasymbolofinternationalsolidarityandselflessservice.

Today,NormanBethuneslegacylivesoninChinaandaroundtheworld.Hisexamplecontinuestoinspirepeopletoworkforamorejustandcompassionatesociety.NormanBethuneshowedusthatonepersoncanmakeadifference,andthatitispossibletochangetheworldthroughactsofkindnessandgenerosity.
