Thequestioniswhy.Somepeoplethinkthisusageoflikereflectssomekindofepidemicofuncertaintyamongyoungpeople.Butthecasuallikehasnowbeenentrenchedlongenoughthatmanyofitsusersaregrayingatthetemplesandthensome.Themodernlikeisactuallyasymptomofsomethingmoregeneralabouthowlanguageschangeovertime.

Language,likenature,abhorsavacuum.Alllanguageshaveatendencytoseepintocornersofmeaningandgetexplicitaboutthem,insteadofsimplyleavethemtocontext.Languagelikestogetpicky.

Youpausebeforesayingsomethingthatraisesthetemperatureabit,reflectsanopinionthatmightarouse,pushestheenvelope.Butonemightalsospelloutthehesitationmoreovertly,andthisiswherethecasuallikecomesin.Thecasuallikeisprobablyjustaticthathappenedtocatchon,unconnectedtoanythingpersonalorcultural.Inotherwords,thecasuallikeisjustbusinessasusualwiththeevolutionoflanguage—andthatevolutionoftenconfounds.
