Abstract:Oneofthebiggestobstaclestoeconomicprofitabilityofsolarwaterheating

systemsistheinvestmentcost.Retrofittingexistingdomestichotwaterheaterswhenanew

solarhotwatersystemisinstalledcanreduceboththeinstallationandmaterialcosts.In

thisstudy,retrofittingexistingwaterheatersforsolarwaterheatingsystemsinSwedish

single-familyhouseswastheoreticallyinvestigatedusingtheTRNSYSsoftware.

Simulationmodelsusingforcedcirculationflowwithdifferentsystemconfigurationsand

controlstrategiesweresimulatedandanalysedinthestudy.Acomparisonwithastandard

solarthermalsystemwasalsopresentedbasedontheannualsolarfraction.Thesimulation

resultsindicatethattheretrofittingconfigurationachievingthehighestannualperformance

consistsofasystemwheretheexistingtankisusedasstorageforthesolarheatanda

smallertankwithaheaterisaddedinseriestomakesurethattherequiredoutlet

temperaturecanbemet.Anexternalheatexchangerisusedbetweenthecollectorcircuit

andtheexistingtank.Forthisretrofittedsystemanannualsolarfractionof50.5%was

achieved.Aconventionalsolarthermalsystemusingastandardsolartankachievesa

comparableperformanceforthesametotalstoragevolume,collectorareaandreference

conditions.
