1Lastyeartherewasagirlatourschoolwhohardlytalkedtoanyone.Ithinkitwasbecausesheseldomshowered，andshesmelledkindofbad.HernamewasCindyLindburg.Ididn’tknowexactlywhereshelived，butitmusthavebeensomewhereintheneighborhoodbecausewealwaysgotontheschoolbusatthesamebusstop.

2CindyLindburgdidn’thavemanyfriends.Shealwayscametothelunchroomaloneandleftalone.Onthebus，nooneofferedheraseat，andsheneveraskedifshecouldshareaseatwithothers.Ithoughtthatmaybeitwasbecauseshewassortofashyperson.Sheseemedlikeanicegirl，whohadanodor（气味）problem.

3Oneday，IwaswalkinguptothebusstopandIsawCarlLittletonmakingfunofher.Icouldn’thearwhathewassaying，butIsawhimlaughingandrollinghiseyesinhistypicalpoking-fun-at-youway.IalsosawhowsaditmadeCindy.Holdinghernotebooktightlytoherchestlikeashield，shestaredatthegroundandmovedasfarawayfromhimaspossiblewithoutleavingthebusstopentirely.AssoonasIgotcloseenough，IglaredatCarltomakehimstoplaughing—eventhoughIknewheprobablywouldn’t.Hedidn’t，soIwalkedoverandstoodclosertoCindysoshewouldn’tfeelquitesobad.Itwasjustoneofthosetimeswhenyoujustknewsomeoneneededsomeonetobeafriend.
