Ships23containersabeam,withapproximately20,000TEUcontainers,arenowin

operationandlargershipsareintheworks.These―ultralargecontainerships‖carry

50%morecontainersthanthoseinoperationjustafewyearsago.Ship-to-shore

containercraneproductionlevelsneedtobeincreasedtomeettheneedsofthenew

ships.

Thispaperpresentsanarrayofcraneconceptsandsystemsthatcanprovidethe

productivityrequiredtoquicklyservicelargeshipsin,orsoontobein,service.The

paperalsodiscussesexistingandfuturesystems,uniqueaspectsofthesystems,

advantagesanddisadvantages,andexpectedwharfloads.

Systemspresentedrangefromtraditionalcranesthatcansimultaneouslyliftmultiple

containers,torevolutionarycranesonelevatedgirderswithmultiplehoistsystems

thatcanmovecontainersfromthevesseldirectlyintotheyard.

Containershipsizesarecontinuallygrowing.Whileshipvolumeshaveincreased

drasticallyovertime,shiplengthsandthenumberofcranesthatcanfitalongtheship

haveonlyincreasedslightly.
