ABSTRACT
Historically,seismicforceshavenotbeenaconcernforearlycontainer
cranes,whichwerelighterandlessstablethantoday’slargerjumbocranes.During
anearthquake,theearliercraneswouldliftfromtherailsbeforesignificantinertia
forcescoulddevelopinthecranestructure.
Currentlargecranes,with100-footorgreaterrailgages,aremuchheavier,
whichresultsinsignificantlylargerseismicforcesinthecranestructure.Liftechhas
performedtime-historyanalysesofA-frameandlowprofilejumbocranes.Our
studiesindicatethatmanyjumbocraneswillbeextensivelydamagedinmoderate
earthquakes,andthatmanyjumbocraneswillbeseverelydamaged,orwillcollapse,
inamajorearthquake.
Containercraneseismicdesigncriteriaarechangingtoaddresstheseismic
risktojumbocranes.Severalupcomingdesignstandards,onefromtheAmerican
SocietyofCivilEngineers,andothersfromports,willspecifyseismicperformance
requirementsfornewcranes.
