ABSTRACT

TheSanFranciscoFireDepartmentacquiredanewfloatingfirestationatPier22½fortheir

fireboatfleet.Thestationisbuiltona9ftx95ftx173ft(2.7mx29mx53m)steelfloatthat

ismooredwithfour60inch(1.52m)diametersteelpiles.Anewpile-supportedsteelpier

structureconnectstothefloatviaasteelaccessramp.Thefloatingstationdesignisunique,

havingasteelfloatwithanattachedbuildingthathousespersonnelatthestationfulltime,

accommodatingsea-levelrise,anddesignedasanessentialfacilitywitha50-yeardesignlife.

Eventhoughthisprojectwasunusual,manyoftheitemstoconsiderandlessonslearnedcanbe

appliedtoimprovedesignsonmoretypicalprojects,suchasferryterminals.Thispaperwill

discusssomeofthoseitems.

INTRODUCTION

Thenewfloatingfirestation(SFFD35)isanimportantadditiontotheSanFranciscowaterfront.

Itwillallowfirefightersreadyaccesstofireboats,improvingtheabilitytoreachpartsofthe

citythatcouldotherwisebeinaccessibleafteramajordisaster.Itisalsoresilienttosealevel

rise,severestorms,flooding,andearthquakes.
