wouldstate.Thisarticlecontendsthatupgradingberthcapacityalone
inordertotacklemega-shipswillleadtocongestionthroughoutyard
facilities.Ibelievethatadditionalcapacitycanbeachievedwhilst
avoidingthespectreofcongestionbyimprovingtheefficiencyofeach
quaycraneataberthandbyincreasingthenumberofquaycraneson
oneship.
THENGICTCONCEPT
Becausethenewgenerationintegratedcontainerterminal(NGICT)
conceptissoexpansiveandthere’slimitedspacewithwhichtoexplore
themanyfacetsandnuancesoftheconceptinthisarticle,thispiece
touchesonlythemaincharacteristicsofthisnewconceptandfocuses
onthestackareainmostdetail.Thisisbecauseincreasingthespeedof
stackoperationsisadirectchallengeforeveryterminalintheworld.
ThemaincharacteristicsoftheNGICTconceptareasfollows:
•Narrowship-to-shore(STS)cranemodulesonhighpositionedrails
whichareabletoworkinadjacentbaysofaship
•Afixedsupport-structureintheSTSareawithwatersidecolumns
around30mbehindaquaywall
•TheSTSareaandthestackareaarefullyintegrated.Thisreducesthe
traveldistancebetweenthesetwoareasforeachcontainer
•TheSTSareacranemodulesputcontainersontopofatwo-directional
AGVwhichoperatesparalleltoaquayuntilthedesignatedstack
lanehasbeenreached.Atthispoint,thetwo-directionalAGVdrives
overashortdistanceinaperpendiculardirectionuntilacontaineris
underneathstackoverheadbridgecranes
