mountedgantryandrubbertiregantrycraneshave,buttheyformthebasisofanew

conceptincontainerterminaldesign.

FransKoch,CEOofKochConsultancyGroupinTheNetherlands,believeshis

designwillhelprevampexistingterminalstoboostproductivityandefficiency,

especiallyasanewgenerationofmegacontainershipschallengeexistingfacilities.

Hisdesignconceptscanbeappliedtonewterminalsaswell.

“Thereisworldwiderecognitionthatfurtherincreaseinthescaleofshippingwill

demandafundamentallynewapproachtocontainerterminalsassuchfactorsasthe

outreachofthecranesandthemaximumloadonthequaysarenearingtheirnatural

limits,”saysKoch.

“Also,theinefficientuseofspaceandenergyconsumptionhasbeenunder

discussionforyears.Ournewgenerationintegratedcontainerterminal(NGICT)

conceptbringsanewgenerationofintegratedcontainerterminalsabigstepcloser.”

TheNGICTconceptissuitableforreconstructingexistingterminals.Forexample,a

terminaloriginallydesignedasastraddlecarrierterminalcanbemodifiedby

replacingoldstraddlecarrierswithasystemoftwo-directionalautomatedguided

vehicles(AGVs)toachieveamuchhigherstackingcapacityandprocessingspeed.

Alternatively,theconceptcanbeemployedifanoldterminalquaywallneedstobe

reinforcedtowithstandtheincreasingloadsoftheship-to-shoregantrycranesorto

permitdredgingworktoincreasethedepthoftheharbor.Inthiscase,analternative

solutionistobuildafixedsupportstructureabout30meters(98feet)inlandfromthe

quaywhereeachpillarhasitsownfoundation.
