Background

Stormwindisoneofthefewforcesthat,althoughconsideredindocksidecontainer

cranedesign,stillcausessignificantdamage—evencollapse.SeeFigure1.

Dependingonthegeographicregion,largetropicalstormsarecalledtyphoons,

cyclones,orhurricanes,eventhoughthemechanismdrivingthestormsisthesame.

Thispaperreferstoallsuchstormsashurricanes,andalthoughitfocusesprimarily

onthedesignofsystemstosecuredocksidecontainercranesagainsthurricanes,it

alsodiscussesdifferencesinstormwindstowagerequirementsforcranesinregions

notpronetohurricanes.

Inalmosteveryhurricane-relatedcranecollapsethatwehaveinvestigated,

failureinitiatedinthetiedownand/orstowagepinsystems.Severalcranestructures

wehavedesignedhaveexperiencedhurricanesexceedingthedesignwindspeeds,yet

haveperformedwell.Noneoftheover1,000cranesconformingtoourforce

coefficientshavefailedduetoaninitialoverstressintheframestructure.Ofthe

cranefailureswehaveinvestigated,thestowagepinsystemandtiedownwharf

bracket,linkplates,andturnbucklesaretheweaklinks.Infact,thestrengthofthe

tiedownsystemissometimesonlyasmallfractio
