Abstract

In1996,theJPEGcommitteebegantoinvestigatepossibilitiesforanewstillimagecompressionstandardtoservecurrentandfutureapplications.Thisinitiative,whichwasnamed JPEG 2000, has resulted in a comprehensivestandard(ISO 15444|ITU-TRecommendationT.800)thatisbeingissuedinsixparts.Part1,inthesameveinastheJPEGbaselinesystem,isaimedatminimalcomplexityandmaximalinterchangeandwasissuedasanInternationalStandardatthe endof2000.Parts2-6 defineextensionstoboththecompressiontechnologyandthefileformatandarecurrentlyinvariousstagesofdevelopment.Inthispaper,atechnicaldescriptionofPart1oftheJPEG2000standardisprovided,andtherationalebehindtheselectedtechnologiesisexplained.AlthoughtheJPEG 2000 standard only specifies the decoder and the codesteam syntax, thediscussionwillspanbothencoderanddecoderissuestoprovideabetterunderstandingofthestandardinvariousapplications.?2002ElsevierScienceB.V.Allrightsreserved.

Introductionandbackground

TheJointPhotographicExpertsGroup(JPEG)committeewasformedin1986underthejointauspicesofISOandITU-T1andwascharteredwiththe“digitalcompressionandcoding continuous-tone still images”.
