Onapieceofpaper,wewrotethenamesofthreefriendswewantedinourgroup.Aftercollectingalltherequests,Mrs.B.informedusthatshewouldtakeintoconsiderationthenameswechoseandwouldletusknowtheresultsthenextday.IhadnodoubtIwouldgetthegroupofmychoice.Onlyafewpeoplebehavednormallyintheclass,andMissywasoneofthem.Iknewwehadchoseneachother.

Thenextday,Ianxiouslywaitedfortheclass.Afterthebellrang,MissyandIstoppedtalkingasMrs.Bcalledforourattention.Shestartedtocalloutnames.Whenshereachedgroupthree,Missy’snamewascalled.So,I’mingroupthree,Ithought.Thesecond,thirdandfourthmembersofthegroupwerecalled.Mynamewasnotincluded.Therehadtobesomemistake!

ThenIheardit.Thelastgroup:“Mauro,Juliette,Rachel,Karina.”Icouldfeelthetearswellinmyeyes.HowcouldIfacebeinginthatgroup—theboywhorarelyspokeEnglish,theonegirlwhowasalwayscoveredbyskirtsthatwentdowntoherankles,andtheothergirlwhoworeweirdclothes.Oh,howbadlyIwantedtobewithmyfriends.

IfoughtbacktearsasIwalkeduptoMrs.B.ShelookedatmeandknewwhatIwastherefor.IwasdeterminedtoconvinceherIshouldbeinthe“good”group.“Why...?”Istarted.

Shegentlyplacedahandonmyshoulder.“Iknowwhatyouwant,Karina,”shesaid,“butyourgroupneedsyou.Ineedyoutohelpthemgetapassinggradeonthisassignment.Onlyyoucanhelpthem.”

Iwasstunned.Iwasconfused.Iwasamazed.ShehadseensomethinginmeIhadn’tseen.
