Relevancevectormachines(RVM)haverecentlyattractedmuchinterestinthe
researchcommunitybecausetheyprovideanumberofadvantages.Theyarebasedon
aBayesianformulationofalinearmodelwithanappropriatepriorthatresultsina
sparserepresentation.Asaconsequence,theycangeneralizewellandprovide
inferencesatlowcomputationalcost.Inthistutorialwefirstpresentthebasictheory
ofRVMforregressionandclassification,followedbytwoexamplesillustratingthe
applicationofRVMforobjectdetectionandclassification.Thefirstexampleistarget
detectioninimagesandRVMisusedinaregressioncontext.Thesecondexampleis
detectionandclassificationofmicrocalcificationsfrommammogramsandRVMis
usedinaclassificationframework.Bothexamplesillustratetheapplicationofthe
RVMmethodologyanddemonstrateitsadvantages.
