Reviewofsecuritymeasures

BluetoothconnectivityisavailableonseveralABBdrivefamilies,suchasthe180,380,480,580andACS880series.

Dependingonthespecificdrivefamily,Bluetoothcomeseitherasastandardoroptionalaccessory.Theadditionof

BluetoothallowsinterfacetotheABBappDrivetune.TheDrivetuneappprovidesadditionalflexibilityandfunctionality

forcommissioningandtroubleshootingthedrive.Questionsregardingsecuritywillnaturallycomeupwithanyproduct

thatoffersawirelessconnectionmethod.ThistechnicalnotereviewsABB’simplementationofBluetoothtoshow

multiplelayersofsecurity.

First,letusreviewhowadevice(phone,tablet,PC)isconnectedtothedriveoverBluetooth.Thedrive’sBluetooth

transceiverisinthecontrolpanel.TheuserphysicallyaccessesthecontrolpaneltoactivateBluetooth.Atthattime,a

pairingcodeisdisplayedonthecontrolpanel’sLCDscreen.ThatpairingcodeisthenenteredintotheDrivetuneappon

theuser’sdevice.Thedevicenowpairstothedrive.Whilethisprocesssoundssimple,therearemanylayersofsecurity

throughouttheprocess.

PairingisanimportantaspectofBluetoothsecurity.TheABBBluetoothcontrolpanelsupportstwopairingmodes.The

default,andmostsecuremodeallowsthedrivetobecomediscoverableforupto5minutesafterthepanel’s“?”button

ispressedfor2seconds.TheBluetoothcontrolpanelgeneratesarandom6-digitpairingcodeeachtime.Thepairing

modewilltimeoutifthat6-digitcodeisnotenteredintothedevicewithinthosefirst5minutes.Alternatively,thedrive

canbeconfiguredtoalwaysbediscoverableandretainthesamepairingcode.Thisalternativeconfigurationprovides

additionaleaseofusebutislesssecure.The6-digitpairingcodeisgenerallyacceptedtoprovideanexcellentlevelof

secur
