I.BasicThemesofHumanisticPsychology

1.1Originsandhistory

ThehumanisticmovementdevelopedinAmericaintheearly1960s，andwastermedthethirdforceinpsychologysinceitaimedtoreplacethetwomainapproachesinthesubjectatthattime，behaviorismandpsychoanalysis.Influencedbygestaltpsychology’sideaofstudyingwholeunits，andexistentialphilosophywithitsbeliefinconsciousfreewill，humanistsarguedthatbehaviorism’sartificialanddehumanizingapproachandpsychoanalysis’sgloomydeterminismwereinsufficienttoprovideacompletepsychology.

Thehumanisticapproachaimedtoinvestigateallthe

uniquelyhumanaspectsofexperiencesuchaslove，hope，creativity，etc.andemphasizedtheimportanceoftheindividual’sinteractionwiththeenvironment.Humanists，suchasMaslow，believedthateveryindividualhastheneedtoself-actualizeorreachtheirpotential，andRogersdevelopclient-centredtherapytohelpindividualsinthisprocessofself-actualization.
