“Pantsonfire”isn’ttheonlyproblemliarsface.NewresearchfromtheUniversityofNotreDameshowsthatwhenpeoplemanagedtoreducetheirliesingivenweeksacrossa10-weekstudy,theyreportedsignificantlyimprovedphysicalandmentalhealthinthosesameweeks.

FundedbyagrantfromtheJohnTempletonFoundation,the“ScienceofHonesty”studywaspresentedrecentlyattheAmericanPsychologicalAssociation’s120thannualconvention.

“Wefoundthattheparticipantscouldpurposefullyanddramaticallyreducetheireverydaylies,andthatinturnwasassociatedwithsignificantlyimprovedhealth,”saysleadauthorAnitaKelly,aNotreDamepsychologyprofessorwhoseresearchincludesthestudyofsecretsandself-disclosure.

Kellyandco-authorLijuanWang,alsoofNotreDame,conductedthehonestyexperimentover10weekswithasampleof110people,35percentofwhomwereadultsand65percentofwhomwerecollegestudents.Theyrangedinagefrom18to71years,withanaverageageof31.

Approximatelyhalftheparticipantswereinstructedtostoptellingbothmajorandminorliesforthedurationofthe10-weekstudy.Theotherhalfservedasacontrolgroupthatreceivednospecialinstructionsaboutlying.Bothgroupscametothelaboratoryweeklytocompletehealthandrelationshipmeasuresandtotakeapolygraphtestassessingthenumberofmajorandwhiteliestheyhadtoldduringthatweek.AccordingtoKelly,Americansaverageabout11liesperweek.

Overthecourseof10weeks,thelinkbetweenlesslyingandbetterhealthwassignificantlystrongerforparticipantsintheno-liegroup,thestudyfound.Forexample,whenparticipantsintheno-liegrouptoldthreefewerwhiteliesthantheydidinotherweeks,theyexperiencedonaverageabo
