First,itmeansthatthesamefilecontainingbytecodeinstructionscanbeplacedonanyplatform;at

runtimethefinalstageofcompilationcanthenbeeasilyaccomplishedsothatthecodewillrunonthat

particularplatform.Inotherwords,bycompilingtoILweobtainplatformindependencefor.NET,in

muchthesamewayascompilingtoJavabytecodegivesJavaplatformindependence.

Performanceimprovement

ILisactuallyabitmoreambitiousthanJavabytecode.ILisalwaysJust-In-Timecompiled(knownas

JIT),whereasJavabytecodewasofteninterpreted.OneofthedisadvantagesofJavawasthat,on

execution,theprocessoftranslatingfromJavabytecodetonativeexecutableresultedinalossof

performance.

Insteadofcompilingtheentireapplicationinonego(whichcouldleadtoaslowstart-uptime),theJIT

compilersimplycompileseachportionofcodeasitiscalled(just-in-time).Whencodehasbeen

compiled.once,theresultantnativeexecutableisstoreduntiltheapplicationexits,sothatitdoesnot

needtoberecompiledthenexttimethatportionofcodeisrun.Microsoftarguesthatthisprocessis

moreefficientthancompilingtheentireapplicationcodeatthestart,becauseofthelikelihoodthatlarge

portionsofanyapplicationcodewillnotactuallybeexecutedinanygivenrun.UsingtheJITcompiler,

suchcodewillneverbecompiled.

ThisexplainswhywecanexpectthatexecutionofmanagedILcodewillbealmostasfastasexecuting
