ToryPartywasfoundedin1679whenParliamentdividedinto2politicalgroupsoverthedisputewhetherJamesIIshouldbetheheirtoKingCharlesII.ThesupportersofJamesIIformedthegroupknownas“Tory”,whiletheopponentsformedthe“Whig”.TheToryPartychangeditsnameintotheConservativepartyandWhigintoLiberalPartyin1833.

    TheConsertiveParty TheConservativepartywasthe“EmpireParty”duringthe19thcentury.BeforeWWI,theconservativepartyandtheLiberalpartywere2principalparties,takingturnsinoffice. After1922theLabourParty(formedin1900)tooktheplaceoftheLiberalPartyasoneofthe2mainparties. NowtheConservativePartyhasabout2millionmembers.Itsupportsprivateenterpriseandisgenerallyopposedtonationalizationandextendingsocialservices.
