Joyceisa91-year-oldmotherofnine,grandmotherof17,andgreat-grandmotherof24.Youdthinkshewouldbeexhaustedandreadytoputherfeetupinretirement,butyoudbewrong.Instead,JoycejustmadehistoryasoneoftheoldestgraduatesofNorthernIllinoisUniversitywhenshegraduatedin2022.

Backin1951,JoyceenrolledinNIUhopingtogetadegreeinhomeeconomics.Shealmostmadeittograduation,butshesaidshegotmarried.Puttingherdegreeonhold,Joycehadthreebabiesinthreeyearsbeforeherhusbandpassedawayafewyearslater.

Shespentfiveyearsasawidowbeforeremarryingandhavingsixmorechildren,includingtwosetsoftwins.Sheclearlyhadherhandsfull,yetsheneverstoppedthinkingaboutthatunfinishedcollegedegree.

Joycementionedthisfeelingofunfinishedbusinesstoherchildren,whoweresupportive.Theyboughtheracomputerandurgedhertofinishthedegree.Finally,in2019,shedecidedthetimewasright!SheenrolledinNIUandtookonlinecoursestowardsageneralstudiesbachelorsdegree.Everydayshesatdownanddidsomeschoolwork,evenwhenitwashardandshefeltlikegivingup.“AlotoftimesIwouldhavequit.Ialmostdid,”sheadmitted.“Therewerejusttoomanypeoplewhoknewaboutit.Ididntwanttoletthemdown.IquitonceandIdontwanttodoitagain.”SoJoycesoldieredon!
