ShecouldnthavedoneitwithoutBritishmathematician,inventorandengineerCharlesBabbage.Theircooperationstartedintheearly1830s,whenLovelacewasjust17.BabbagehaddrawnupplansforamachinehecalledtheDifferenceEngine—essentially,agiantmechanicalcalculator.Inthemiddleofhisworkonit,theteenageLovelacemetBabbageataparty.
There,heshowedanincompleteprototype(原型)ofhismachine.Accordingtoafamilyfriendwhowasthere:“Whileothervisitorsgazedattheworkingofthisbeautifulinstrument,MissByron,youngasshewas,understooditsworking,andsawthegreatbeautyoftheinvention.”
Itwasmathematicalobsession(痴迷)atfirstsight.ThetwostruckupaworkingrelationshipandeventualclosefriendshipthatwouldlastuntilLovelacesdeathin1852,whenshewasonly36.BabbageabandonedhisDifferenceEnginetobrainstormanewAnalyticalEngine—intheory,capableofmorecomplexnumbercrunching—butitwasLovelacewhosawthatenginestruepotential.
TheAnalyticalEnginewasmorethanacalculator—itscomplexmechanismsandthefactthattheuserfeditcommandsviaapunchcardmeanttheenginecouldperformnearlyanymathematicaltaskordered.Lovelaceevenwroteinstructionsforsolvingacomplexmathproblem,shouldthemachineeverseethelightofday.
Manyhistorianswouldlaterconsiderthoseinstructionsthefirstcomputerprogram,andLovelacethefirstprogrammer.Itsherworkin“poeticalscience”,asshecalledit,thatdefinesherasoneofthegreatestscientists.
