Howcantheseoddwordsbeexplained?PartoftheansweristheBritishsenseofhumor.Britonsdon’tliketotakethingstooseriously,andthisisevidentthroughmanyBritishwordsandphrases.Forexample,to“spendapenny”meanstousethebathroom.Itreferstothedayswhenpeoplehadtopayapennytouseapublictoilet.InaninterviewfortheBBC’swebsite,BritishlinguistDavidCrystalsuggestedtheremaybehistoricalreasonsforthelargenumberofoddwordsandphrasesinBritishEnglish.Hethinksthattheybeganinthelate16thandearly17thcenturies.Thiswasagreatageforthetheater,whenShakespeareandotherwritersworkedhardtokeepupwiththedemandfornewplays.
