1.GENERALINFORMATION
TheAccu-SteerLA17unitisahydrauliclinearactuatordesigned
tointerfaceanautopilotsystemwithamechanicalsteeringsys-
temssuchaswire,cableorchaindrives.Ahydrauliclinearac-
tuatorconsistsofahydraulicdriveunit(containingapumpunit,
bypassvalveandreservoirassembly),asteeringcylinderandthe
interconnectinghoses.
Oneendofthecylinderisfixedandtheotherendisconnectedto
atillerarmorthemechanicalquadrant,whichisconnectedtoa
ruddershaft.Withthisconnectiontoatillerarmthelinearmove-
mentofthecylinderischangedtorotarymovement,whichturns
therudderandsteersthevessel.
Duringnormalmechanicalsteering,thehydraulicsteeringcylinder
strokestoportandstarboardasthevesselissteeredmanually.
Theoilinbothsidesofthecylinderflowsbackandforththrough
anormallyopenbypassvalvelocatedinthelinearactuatordrive
unit.Thesteeringcylinderisconnectedtothedriveassemblywith
twohoses(portandstarboard).Whentheautopilotisswitchedinto
theoperatingmode,thebypassvalveiselectricallyclosed.The
autopilotthendrivesthereversinghydraulicpumpwhichinturn
