On3July,2003,a35-year-oldEnglishmancalledDougBrucewalkedintoapolicestationinNewYork,andtoldthepolicethathedidnotknowhisownname.Hehadwokenupafewminutesearlieronasubwaytrain,withaheadache,andhadnoideawherehewasgoingorwhohewas.“Iwasfrightened,”hesaidlater,whentalkingabouttheexperience.“Ididn’tknowanything.Itwaslikebeinginthedarkness.”

Dougwenttothepolicestationbecausehehadnowhereelsetogo.HewaswearingaT-shirt,shortsandhadabagwithsomethinginit:aSpanishbook,abunchofkeysandamapofNewYork.Thepolicewereconfused（困惑的）.“We’dneverhadanythinglikethisbefore,”saidapoliceman.TheysentDougtoahospital.Onhisnamecardthenursewrote“unknownwhiteman”.
