Today,manycompaniesstillbasetheirrewardsystemsonthe1950scompensationmodelmadepopularduringthebriefperiodwhenU.S.companiesdominatedtheworld.Withtodaysincreasinglycompetitiveenvironment,however,companiesmustlookmorecloselyatthecost-benefitofrewards,insteadofjustusingtheminanattempttoreduceemployeedissatisfaction.Companiesmustprovideshort-termmotivationandencourageemployeestodeveloplong-termskillsthatwillaidthecompany.Mostimportantly,companiesmustalsoattractandretainhighperformers,insteadofalienatingthemwithpaysystemsthatgiveeveryonepayincreaseswithoutregardtolevelsofperformance.Forexample,suchnewcompensationapproachesmayincludeskill-basedpay,gainsharingplans,andflexiblebenefitssystems.

Traditionalcompensationapproachesarestilloftenmodeledonthecentralization-basedorganizationalmodel,inwhichdecisionsweremadeatthetopandmanagementrigidlydefinedtasks.However,withglobalcompetitionbecominganincreasinglyprominentissue,companiesneedrewardsystemsthatmatchtheirmovementtodecentralizedstructures.Largernumbersofcompaniesarealsobecomingveryawarethattheycannotjustpassadditionalcompensationcostsontofuturecustomers.Today,ourpaysystemsmustmoveinstepwiththeparticipative-managementtrendbybecomingmoreflexibleinsteadofremainingfixed.Thisadjustmentinvolvesmanyfactorsincludingshorterproductlifecycles,aneedtobemoreflexible,aneedforworkerstocontinuallygainadditionalskills,andforthemtothinkmoreon
