eventstheirdatapredicted.Theyjustdidn’texpectthemtooccurthisyear.
Whileitwilltakemoreresearchtoconfirmifclimatechangemadethisfloodeventmore
extreme，the2021GreaterYellowstoneClimateAssessmentpredictssignificantchangesin
precipitation（降水），includingwhenitwillarriveandwhatformitwilltake.Scientistsexpect
morespringrainandlesswintersnow.Theassessmentalsopredictsincreasingannual
precipitationinYellowstoneNationalPark.
Changeshavebeenalreadydocumentedintheassessment.Since1950，springprecipitation
intheregionhasincreasedby17percentinApriland23percentinMay.Snowfallhasdwindled
eventhoughoverallannualprecipitationhasincreased.Thatmeansratherthanaslowreleaseof
meltwatertovalleysduringthesummermonths，rainfalltendstocombinewithmeltingsnow，
causingriskiereventsliketherecentflood.
Juneprecipitationthisyearisnowatmorethan400percentaboveaverageinthepartsof
MontanaandWyomingthatincludeYellowstone.Andastemperaturesrise，theserain-on-snow
eventsareprojectedtobecomemorefrequentathigherelevations（海拔）inwesternNorth
America，whilelowersnowpackwillmakethemlessfrequentatlowelevations.
