Theworldneedsmoreproductivitygrowth.AsarecentMcKinseyGlobalInstitutereportargues,it’sthebestpossibleantidotetowealthinequality,inflation,andexplodingdebtandcouldprovide

crucialfundingforthenet-zerotransitionandimprovedlivingstandards.

It’salsowhateverycompanyneeds.Yetproductivity

growthhaslargelydeclinedsincetheglobalfinancialcrisisof2007–09,particularlyinthemostadvancedeconomies(Exhibit1).

Themacrocausesofdecliningproductivitygrowtharevisibleineverydaylife.First,thedramatic

benefitsoftechnologicalchange—suchasMoore’slaw,thedoublingoftransistorsonachipeverytwoyears—havefaded,withimprovementsbecoming

moreincremental.Second,investmentsin

restructuringandoffshoringalsoreachedapointofdecliningreturns.

Ourlatestresearch(seesidebar“Ourmethodology”)

suggeststhattherearealsomicrocausesof

decliningproductivitygrowth,whichareharderto

seeuntiltheobserverreachestheoperatinglevel

ofafactoryorcallcenter.Thelossofoperational

disciplineinthewakeoftherepeatedshocksof

thepastfiveyearsledtohighlevelsofattritionandjobchurn.Practicesthathadbeenpainstakingly

refined,codified,andpasseddownfromworkertoworker—oftenoverdecades—weresetasideduringtheinitialCOVID-19emergency.Thesubsequentlossofcriticaltalent(Exhibit2)meantthatthe

chainsofknowledgestayedbroken.
