3OutlineDealsexclusivelywithdynamic,stochasticsystems.Discrete-eventmodelsareappropriateforthosesystemsforwhichchangesinsystemstateoccuronlyatdiscretepointsintime.Coversgeneralprinciplesandconcepts:Eventscheduling/timeadvancealgorithm.Thethreeprevalentworldviews.Introducessomeofthenotionsoflistprocessing.

4ConceptsinDiscrete-EventSimulationSystem:acollectionofentitiesthatinteracttogetherovertime,e.g.,peopleandmachines.Model:anabstractrepresentationofasystem.Systemstate:acollectionofvariablesthatcontainalltheinfonecessarytodescribethesystematanytime.Entity:anyobjectorcomponentinthesystem,e.g.,aserver,acustomer,amachine.Attributes:thepropertiesofagivenentity.

5ConceptsinDiscrete-EventSimulationLists:acollectionofassociatedentities,orderedinsomelogicalfashion,a.k.a,sets,queuesandchains.Event:aninstantaneousoccurrencethatchangesthestateofasystem,e.g.,anarrivalofanewcustomer.Eventlist:alistofeventnoticesforfutureevents,orderedbytimeofoccurrence,a.k.a.thefutureeventlist(FEL)Activity:adurationoftimeofspecifiedlengthwhichisknownwhenitbegins,e.g.,aservicetime.Clock:avariablerepresentingsimulatedtime.Note:differentsimulationpackagesusedifferentterminologyforthesameorsimilarconcepts.
