Later,inthe1600s,inenglandtherewasanannualobservancecalled“motheringsunday.”itwascelebratedduringjune,onthefourthsunday.Onmotheringsunday,theservants,whogenerallylivedwiththeiremployers,wereencouragedtoreturnhomeandhonortheirmothers.Itwastraditionalforthemtobringaspecialcakealongtocelebratetheoccasion.Intheu.s,in1907anajarvis,fromphiladelphia,beganacampaigntoestablishanationalmothersday.Jarvispersuadedhermotherschurchingrafton,westvirginiatocelebratemothersdayonthesecondanniversaryofhermothersdeath,the2ndsundayofmay.Thenextyearmothersdaywasalsocelebratedinphiladelphia.
Jarvisandothersbeganaletter-writingcampaigntoministers,businessmen,andpoliticiansintheirquesttoestablishanationalmothersday.Theyweresuccessful.Presidentwoodrowwilson,in1914,madetheofficialannouncementproclaimingmothersdayanationalobservancethatwastobeheldeachyearonthe2ndsundayofmay.
Manyothercountriesoftheworldcelebratetheirownmothersdayatdifferenttimesthroughouttheyear.Denmark,finland,italy,turkey,australia,andbelgiumcelebratemothersdayonthesecondsundayinmay,asintheu.s.
