In1959,voraciousinvasiveratswereblamedforkillinghundredsofwhite-facedstormpetrels,asmallseabird,onNewZealand’sMariaIsland.Inparttoprotectthebirds,conservationistsspreadratpoisononthe2-hectareisland,alsoknownasRuapuke.Theydidn’tintendtoeradicatetheratsbut5yearslaterwerepleasantlysurprisedtodiscoverthattherodentshaddisappeared,andtheseabirdsweresafe..

Today,thatpioneeringeffortandothershavehelpedinspireaglobalpushtoeradicateratsfrommanyotherislands.Overthepasthalf-century,peoplehavemade820attemptson666islands,accordingtoadatabasemaintainedbythenonprofitIslandConservation.Some88%havesucceeded,saysJamesRussell,aconservationbiologistattheUniversityofAuckland.Asaresult,boobies,shearwaters,petrels,andotherseabirdshaverecovered,andislandcreaturesfromlizardstostickinsectshavereclaimedtheirhomes.

That’sgoodnewsforconservationists,becausealthoughratsareconsideredtheultimateurbanpesttheymaydotheirworstdamagewhentheyinvadeislands,wherebirdsandotheranimals,unusedtothesepredators,canbeespeciallyvulnerabletoextinction.Althoughtheworld’s465,000islandscomprisejust5.3%ofEarth’sland,island-dwellingspeciesaccountforanestimated75%ofallknownbird,mammal,amphibian,andreptileextinctions.
