Thermalstoragesystemshavebeenaroundfordecadesandincludevariouscomponentsandmethodstostoreandretrievepre-cooledmedium.Icestoragehasbeenpopularinlargecommercialapplicationslocatedinregionswithhighpeak(daytime)utilityenergycostsandamuchloweroff-peak(nighttime)cost.

Theconceptisfairlysimple;usethebuildingairconditioningequipmentduringoff-hourstomakeiceorbrinepermanentlystoredinathermalcontainmentsystem.Thenusetheiceduringpeakhourstocoolthebuildingchilledwaterloop.Themakingoficeoccursduringtraditionalnon-businesshourswhenelectricityischeaperandthebuildingcoolingloadmaybemetusingminimalcoolingequipment.Theunusedchillersarethenreassignedtomakeice.Asmorning,peakhoursapproach,thechillersarere-configuredautomaticallytoserveabasecoolingloadwhilereturningbuildingchilledwaterisdivertedtotheicestoragetanks.Thissystemiscommonlyreferredtoas“peakshaving”or“loadleveling”wherethebuildingspeakcoolingloadprofileisleveledtotheoutputofonechilleronlyandtheremainingloadsatisfiedwithmeltedice.Sometrade-offofcapitalcostsisavailablebyunder-sizingthechillerplantandreassigningthecosttoicestoragesystems.Acomplexcontrolsystemmonitorseverythingfromspaceandwatertemperaturestooutdoorairconditionsandweatherforecasttopredicticestorageneedsforthenexttwentyfourhourperiod.Obviously,insomeclimatezones,thebuildingcoolingloadprofilechangeswithoutdoorconditionsandtheneedforicefluctuatesaccordingly.Figure-1indicatesatypicalloadprofilefora40,0
