BCcommunitytoreduceGHGemissionswithHydrogenAssistedRenewablePowerSystem(HARP)

VANCOUVER–ThetownofBellaCoola,BritishColumbia,willsoonbethesiteofastate-of-the-artenergysystemthatwilldemonstrateacleanpowersolutionforremotecommunities.TheHARPprojectisapartnershipbetweenBCHydro,GeneralElectric(GE),andPowertech.TheProjectissupportedbySustainableDevelopmentTechnologyCanada(SDTC),anot-for-profitcorporationcreatedbytheGovernmentofCanada.

“TheHARPprojectwilladdresstwochallenges,”saidBlairLekstrom,MinisterofEnergy,MinesandPetroleumResources.“ItwillreduceBellaCoola’sannualdieselconsumptionby200,000litres–loweringgreenhousegasemissionsby600tonnesannually,andprovidestorageforrun-of-riverpower,sotheelectricitycanbeusedwhenthecommunityneedsitmost.”

BellaCoola,whichis439kilometresnorthofVancouver,isnotconnectedtoBCHydro’sgrid.Currently,thetownispoweredbydieselgenerators,whichemitgreenhousegases,andbyarun-of-riverfacilitywhich,whileclean,isnotcapableofstoringenergy.

Thispeakpowershavingsystemworksbyconvertingelectricityfromarenewablesource(run-of-river),inoffpeakperiods,intohydrogenthroughanelectrolyzer,andsubsequentlyintoelectricitythroughafuelcellforpowerduringperiodsofpeakdemand.

“Powertechisaleaderinprovidingcleanenergyconsulting,testing,andsystemsolutionssuchasthisHARPproject,”saidMossadiqS.Umedaly,PowertechExecutiveChairman.“Thisprojectdemonstrateshowtheintegrationofrenewablepowerandcleanfuelcelltechnologycandisplacedieselgenerationandreducegreenhousegasemissions.”

Thebenefitswillbeoptimizedthroughtheuseofamicrogridsystemwhichwillwirelesslymonitorandreacttochangesinsupplyanddemand.AMicrogridControllerwillfindthemosteconomicallyefficientwaytomanageenergy
