EvenastheCOVID-19pandemicholdssociety’sattention,thepressingchallengeofclimatechangeremains.
Withaviewoutbeyondthecurrentpandemic,arguablythegreatestinnovationchallengehumankindhas
everfacedisstaringusintheface:theworldhas10yearstohalveglobalgreenhousegasemissionsand
avoidglobalwarmingofabove1.5°C,anamountbeyondwhichscientistswarndangerousimpactswillkickin.1Toachievethis,everysectoroftheglobaleconomyneedstotransforminjustovertwobusinesscycles.Before2050theglobaleconomyneedstobeat‘netzero’carbonemissions.Someofthetechnologiesandsolutionscriticaltoenablethistransformationareprovenbutneedrapidcommercialisation.Othersarestillinalab.Manyarenotyetevenconceptualised.
Entrepreneurs–theinstigatorsof
innovationandtransformation–are
criticalplayersinmakingtheartof
theimpossible,possible.Theyare
aprovencohortforbringingnovel
technologiesanddisruptiveapproachestoindustry,andindoingsoinventing
anewfuture.Marketsasdiverse
asInternetsearch,e-commerce,
smartphones,ride-sharingandelectricvehicles(EV),havebecomemainstreamthroughthesuccessoffounder-led
companiesbacked,atsomepoint,
byventurecapital.Togetherwiththe
earlystageinvestorsthatpumpinthefundstoenablescalingofthesenewapproachesandtechnologies,theywillbekeytotransformingsectorstoanetzerofuture.
Therealityofthestartupworld,
however,isthatventurecapitalists
lookforcompaniesthathavemassivecommercialviability,canmonetise
solutionsasquicklyaspossible,andhitreturnsmeasuredinmultiplesnotpercentagepoints.Thisworldisnotdrivenbyimpact,butbyinvesting
opportunity.
