Thiseffectcapitalizesonthefactthatwhenpeoplemakeerrors,thoseerrorsarentalwaysthesame.Somepeoplewilltendtooverestimate,andsometounderestimate.Whenenoughoftheseerrorsareaveragedtogether,theycanceleachotherout,resultinginamoreaccurateestimate.Ifpeoplearesimilarandtendtomakethesameerrors,thentheirerrorswontcanceleachotherout.Inmoretechnicalterms,thewisdomofcrowdsrequiresthatpeoplesestimatesbeindependent.If,forwhateverreasons,peopleserrorsbecomecorrelatedordependent,theaccuracyoftheestimatewillgodown.
