ThisunitisthesecondunitofModule2inBookA,Grade8.Thetopicofthismoduleis‘NatureandtheEnvironment’,whichpresentstherelationshipbetweenManandthenature.Theunit6‘birdwatching’ispreparedwellbyunit5inwhichstudentshavelearnedsomeusefulexpressionsclosetonatureandtheenvironment.

Thethemeofthisunitis‘Birdwatching’anditismainlyabouttheintroductionofrarebirdsandZhalongNatureReserve.Thisreadinglessonisthesecondperiodoftheunit,andthereadingtextismainlyaboutZhalongNatureReserve,aspecialplaceforbirds.ThemainteachingcontentisfocusedonhavingabetterunderstandingofZhalongandtheprotectionfortheenvironment.Sotheteacherdoesn’tspendtoomuchtimedealingwiththewordsinclassandsomeactivitiesinthebookwillbeadjusted.Inthislesson,thebottom-upreadingmodelwillbeemphasized.Byreadingthetext,studentswillhaveabetterunderstandingofZhalongandtheirawarenessofprotectingwildlifeandtheenvironmentwillbeimproved.

Thestudentshavebeenpreparedwellbythelastlessonandtheyhaveknownsomekindsofbirdsandarecapableofdescribingbirds,whilemanystudentsarenotfamiliarwithZhalong.TheymaybeinterestedinwhatkindsofbirdsliveinZhalongandwhathappenstotheminthisspecialworld.Inthisway,theteacherwillbuildasolidscaffoldforstudentstogetfamiliarwiththetopicbypresentingsomepictures.Andthestudentswillbeabletoexpresstheirideasaboutthespecialplace

TheGrade8studentsareexpectedtomastercertainreadingstrategies,suchasskimming,scanning,predictingandguessingmeaninginthecontext.Soitisnecessaryfortheteachertodesignsomeactivitiestoguidethestudentstoapplyandstrengthentheirreadingstrategiesandtocultivatetheircriticalthinking.
