    thenchaosandcomplexitytheoryinthe1980sand‘90s.Sincehisretirementand

    hiswifeGinny’sdeathoflungcancerin1989,he’dhadlotsoftimefordabbling.

    Withthekidsgrownandgone,hesoldthefamilyhouseinSouthern

    CaliforniaandmovedtothecentralSierraNevadanearAlderSprings,anhour

    outsideFresno,amongtallpinesandoldoaksandtree-sizedmanzanita.Hespent

    hisdaysworkingandplayingonhistwenty-acrespreadandinhisgreat

    barrackslike,twelve-thousand-square-footretirement“partyhouse.”Solar

    poweredandoffthegrid,hebuiltthehousewithhisownhands,outofwood

    fromhisownland’strees.

    Oncethehousewasup,hefoundhimselfplayingmorethanworking:

    tossinghorseshoes,bowinghisfiddle,strumminghisbanjo,jammingwithyoung

    friends,endlesslytinkeringwithhishomesound-studio’selectronics.
