FourwildyoungpandaswerefoundatdifferenttimeswalkingaroundwiththeirmothersinanaturereserveinnorthwesternChinainrecentmonths,areportsaidonSunday.Infrared(红外线的)camerasinBaishuijiangNationalNatureReserveinGansuProvincecaughtfouryoungpandasfollowingtheirmothersandlearningsurvivalskills,suchasfeedingthemselves,inthefirstquarterof2019.

Itwasthelatestfindingofnewyoungpandasinthearea,whichhasthelargestpopulationofwildpandasamongChina’s67naturereserves.Thefourthnationalsurveyonpandas,releasedin2015,saidtherewere110wildpandaslivingintheBaishuijiangarea.Atotalof1,864livedinChina.

TheBaishuijiangNationalNatureReservehasusedinfraredcamerassince2012tomonitorpandas,butthisisthefirsttimethatfourpairsofpandashavebeenfound.“Inthepast,wefoundonepaireveryquarteratmost,”saidHeLiwen,directoroftheBaishuijiangreserve.Theyoungpandas’bodysizessuggestedthattwoofthemwereayearandahalfold,whiletheothertwowerealmost2yearsold.

“Thefourpairswerecaughtindifferentplacesfarawayfromeachother.It’sveryeasytoseethedifferences,”hesaid.“Sowecanbesureofthenumber.”Baishuijiangstaffmembersalsofoundrarewildlife,includinggoldenmonkeys,Asiangoldencatsandgazelles.
