rThelabourincomeshareisawidelyusedmeasureofinequalitywhichmeasurestheproportionoftotalincomeinacountrythatemployedpeopleearnbyworking.Thissharedeclinedgloballyby0.6percentagepointsbetween2019and2022andhassinceremainedflat.Althoughthistrendisconsistentwiththelonger-termobserveddecline(1.6percentagepointsbetween

2004and2024),nearly40percentofthetotaldeclineobservedoverthepasttwodecadesoccurredduringthethreeyearsmarkedbytheCOVID-19pandemicfrom2020-22.

●Whilethedecreaseappearsmodestintermsofpercentagepoints,in2024itrepresentsanannualshortfallinlabourincomeof$2.4trillion(inconstantPPP)comparedtowhatworkerswouldhaveearnedhadthelabourincomeshareremainedstablesince2004.

rAmongstotherfactors,economicstudieshaveidentifiedtechnologyasakeydriverofdeclinesinthelabourincomeshare.Recentdevelopmentsintheartificialintelligence(AI)fieldmakeitparticularlyrelevanttoanalysetherelationshipbetweentechnologicalinnovationsandthelabourincomeshare.Acrossasampleof36countrieswiththerequireddata,composedofmostlyadvancedeconomies,technologicalinnovationsoverthepasttwodecadesarefoundtoproducepersistentincreasesinlabourproductivityandoutput,howevertheycanalsoreducethelabourincomeshare.Theevidencepresentedsuggeststhatautomation-orientedtechnologicalprogresscouldbecontributingtolabourincomesharedeclines.
