beneficialeffects.Andyet,thesamemotivationthatcanpushpeopletoexertmore

effortinaconstructivewaycouldalsomotivatepeopletobemorelikelytoengagein

unethicalbehaviors,”saysMauriceSchweitzer,anassociateprofessoratPenn’s

WhartonSchool.“Itturnsoutthere’snoeconomicbenefittojusthavingagoal—

youjustgetapsychologicalbenefit”Schweitzersays.“Butinmanycases,goalshave

economicrewardsthatmakethemmorepowerful.”AprimeexampleSchweitzer

andhiscolleaguesciteisthe2004collapseofenergy-tradinggiantEnron,where

managersusedfinancialincentivestomotivatesalesmentomeetspecificrevenue

goals.Theproblem,Schweitzersays,istheactualtradeswerenotprofitable.
